20. Some have argued that a few human lives, for example, those in a persistently vegetative state, are beyond both giving and receiving care and thus beyond the category of love based on sanctity. I am persuaded by the argument that someone who is permanently vegetative — having irremediably lost not merely reason but also emotion, sensation, social relation, and the potential for these things — has no meaningful well-­being and thus is outside the ambit of human caring. She is, in effect, already dead. The psychosomatic unity that once undergirded sanctity has forever dissolved (at least in this world). Thus one may remove all “life support,” because “life support” is a misnomer.
